Bio

Jesse Mangerson is a contemporary realist painter touching on a wide variety of subjects including cityscape, landscape, and the figure. Much of his work bridges the gap between fine art and illustration as his process pairs the practice of location painting and direct observational study with his use of multiple photo references to create unique narrative works.

His recent focus on an historical icon in the context of a contemporary setting is the framework for his continuing cityscape series depicting the character of the vintage Volkswagen beetle juxtaposed against the city of San Francisco.  Drawn to the coastal light falling across the curvilinear elegance of the form, Jesse allows the sublime to enter into the process of his search for this subject in time and space. In some instances it seems that his subject finds him whether or not he is actively engaged in seeking the reference... "It is these moments of awareness that often produce the most beautiful works."

Mangerson's paintings present the historic vehicle as a character, or a figurative subject matter that holds the stamp of time, past cultural influence, and the memories of many drivers within it's utilitarian conventions.  This body of work details the streets of San Francisco with an allusion to the time before the most recent "tech-boom", a bohemian Bay-area past that seems to be quickly fading.

Jesse studied illustration at both the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, earning a BFA, and at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA earning an MFA.  His work developed under the influences of Kazuhiko Sano, Craig Nelson, Mark Tennant, and William Maughan while studying along side classmates at the Academy of the likes of Tyler Jacobsen, Ray Bonilla, Angela Dominguez, Jeremy Mann, and Greg Gandy.

He holds a full time faculty position at the Academy of Art where he  instructs students in the Master's program through the online platform and authors online courses.  Jesse's work has been shown in galleries throughout the US, in group shows, Salon competitions, and solo venues. His paintings hang in the homes of private collectors nationally.

His illustration focus afforded him an opportunity to spend time with the New Yorker Magazine in an early career internship followed by publishing with clients such as the Willamette Week, Cause Communications, Turkey Pluckers Press, and 4 Dollar Books as well as a recent multi year focus on privately commissioned narrative paintings.

Jesse lives with his wife and children in Madison, WI.
